The Judge

THE JUDGE

With Robert Downey, Jr., Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga, Vincent D'Onofrio, Billybob Thornton, Dax Shepard, Jeremy Strong

Written by Nick Schenk, Bill Dubuque, David Dobkin
Directed by David Dobkin

Hank Palmer is a tough, successful city lawyer. Comfortable in his shoes, this self-assured life is overturned when he heads to his small town family home for his mother's funeral.

His older brother is a bitter former school baseball star, his younger one mentally disabled, and his father (a judge) feisty and headstrong. This uncomfortable family reunion is turned on its head when the judge is accused of knocking over and killing a man he once reluctantly failed to convict. Naturally after some turmoil (and still not seeing eye-to-eye with is dad), Hank decides to defend his father. Facing seemingly condemning evidence, amid this court case Hank reconnects with an old girlfriend, faces unfinished personal and family business, and uncovers some secrets.

This entertaining drama has a light sense of humour built into it, something Downey Jr. always handles well. It looks at mortality, success, pride and the necessity to sometimes step back and be a little humble. If you're expecting a full-on staunch court room drama, this may not be what you're looking for.
